LÊ QUÝ ĐÔN
Today we have entered the era of highly automated ships with modern navigation systems requiring well-trained technical operators. Lê Quý Đôn, a sail training ship, is a tribute to the “salty dogs” of the bygone days. Built for the Vietnamese navy, she was designed by world-renowned Polish sailing ship designer Zygmunt Choreń. A traditional barque with 21 different sails and a total area of 1400 m2, she can be hand operated with the help of only a few capstans. The masts are made from marine-grade aluminum and the mizzenmast doubles as an exhaust pipe for the main engine and diesel generators. For ease of operation, the ship was designed with a large flying working-deck one level above the main deck, and weather decks covered in wood as required by tradition.
